About Us
Feral pigs can be very damaging to the environment both from a conservation and farm productivity view point. With the rise of "carbon farming forests" connectivity across the landscape is increasing for feral pigs allowing them to move more freely and access more areas of suitable habitat. Increasingly farmers, forest managers and large land owners will have to find cost effective ways to manage feral pig numbers. Based in Northland, we have experience in managing feral pigs on private land for conservation purposes. Over recent years we have developed some methods for our own use that have proved effective, and are now looking to help others with their feral pig problems.
We realize that every individual situation is different, but believe that in most cases using a trapping approach will be more effective in reducing feral pig numbers that using traditional dogs and hunters. Experience has shown that when dogs are used in an area, they may catch a small number of pigs, but the majority will be driven away to neighboring areas, only to return when they feel they are no longer in danger, or when they are chased back again by other hunters with dogs.
With the trapping system we employ there is no slamming gate, so feral pigs are free to continue entering the trap at any time, in fact, other pigs in the trap can be a great lure. This means that it is not uncommon to capture five to eight feral pigs in one night, there is nothing to fear about the trap for the feral pigs so they do not become trap shy. All this means that it is possible to remove all the feral pigs resident in an area. We have achieved this before, as proven by post trapping monitoring using baited trail cameras.
Often feral pig control must be carried out in remote areas, this can create problems of efficiency when checking or re-baiting traps. We have adopted the most recent technology in automated trail cameras to address this, and are now able to reduce unnecessary visits to a minimum, often we only have to log on to check a trap.
